''In The Black'' is set in our solar system circa 2220. Of all the cosmos, we are naturally most familiar with our home planet, its sun and moon, and the comets and planets that humans have observed for as long as humans have existed. At the dawn of the space age the first robotic probes and manned missions initiated a stream of discoveries that would grow to a torrent as we transformed to a spacefaring civilization. Our own solar system is populated with astounding wonders, and there is perhaps no more spectacular world than the planet Saturn. With its unique ring system and menagerie of moons, the Saturn system offers the most stunning backdrop for players to fight their battles in, and for this reason it is where ''In The Black'' begins. [[File:Moons of Saturn.jpg|thumb|Major Moons of Saturn]] As a realistic space simulator, ''In The Black'' must take into account the great distances that exist in space, and in keeping with our commitment to realism, each battlespace represents an actual location in the solar system. Everything in or near the battlespace will be in its proper place with the correct orientation. Similarly, the starting positions of the players will always be based on considerations of how and why the ships would be there in the first place. Where did they come from? How fast are they going? How much delta-V do they have? As the game evolves more battlespaces will open up and a greater variety of locations throughout the entire solar system will become available.
